Using Dendrochronology To Measure Radial Growth

چکیده
In 1977, the United States Department of Agriculture and the Canadian Department of the Environment agreed to cooperate in an expanded and accelerated research and development effort, the Canada /United States Spruce Budworms Program (CANUSA), aimed at the spruce budworm in the East and the western spruce budworm in the West. The objective of CAN USA was to design and evaluate strategies for controlling the spruce budworms and managing budworm-susceptible forests, to help forest managers attain their objectives in an economically and environmentally acceptable manner. The work reported in this publication was funded by the Program.

Climate from dendrochronology: latest developments and results
This review deals with the latest developments in dendroclimatology focused on climate reconstruction. It presents results from research carried out during the period 1992–2001, when both the geographical and chronological extension of tree-ring data were greatly improved. Research projects are presently being carried out in nearly all the main forest land areas of the Subarctic and Subantarcti...
متن کاملDrought and mistletoe reduce growth and water-use efficiency of Scots pine
To what extent do mistletoes contribute to growth decline in drought-prone forests? Can the rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations offset the negative impacts of drought and mistletoe infestation on tree growth? Long-term data on growth and intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) may allow answering both questions. We used dendrochronology to assess long-term changes in radial growth and iWUE in S...
متن کاملThe directional hybrid measure of efficiency in data envelopment analysis
The efficiency measurement is a subject of great interest. The majority of studies on DEA models have been carried out using radial or non-radial approaches regarding the application of DEA for the efficiency measurement. This paper, based on the directional distance function, proposes a new generalized hybrid measure of efficiency under generalized returns to scale with the existence of both r...
متن کاملRadiocarbon Analysis of Pinus Lagunae Tree Rings: Implications for Tropical Dendrochronology
A promising species for tropical dendrochronology is Pinus lagunae, a pine tree found in Baja California Sur (Mexico) around lat 23.5°N. In 1995, we sampled a total of 27 wood cores from 13 Pinus lagunae trees in Sierra La Victoria (23°36′N, 109°56′W), just north of Sierra La Laguna, at an elevation of 1500–1600 m. Selected trees were locally dominant, but their ring-width patterns could not be...
متن کاملDendrochronology: a Review with Emphasis on New Zealand Applications
The distinction is drawn in this paper between true dendrochronological studies (using crossdating) and studies using tree-ring counts to age trees or date events. The advantages of the former approach are emphasized. We summarize the main methods used in dendrochronology, concentrating on new approaches and techniques important in the New Zealand context, present a review of recent dendrochron...
